Thank-you to the late Arthur E. Flegel 1917-2018. Back in 1968 he created the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia ( AHSGR) with the head-quarters in Lincoln, NE.
His research and findings focussed upon the emigration of Germans from villages to Russian...referred to as the Volga Germans...which is a story about my family ... and their struggles... Here is a link to the film "It's All Earth and Sky- Introduction to Germans from Russia."
A Naval aviator... Grumman F8F Bearcat, fighter pilot, U.S.S. Wright Carrier, top secret rated veteran of WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and an American Airlines pilot.
Here is the most fascinating of all professions. The soldier may wait forty years for this opportunity. Most lawyers, most clergymen die in obscurity, but every single day opens new doors for the journalist who holds the confidence of the community and has the capacity to address it.
I am a “gay” man, a journalist. At ninety-three this is certainly not my coming-out story. (I’m using quotation marks because back in the day I told my friends to stop using this inappropriate word or it would stick.)
Tim Cook of Apple said it best: “I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.” Otherwise I would not have had the opportunity to live the serendipitous life that I have enjoyed so much.
I realized that reaching the top tiers in any endeavor would be all but impossible without a conventional family. This gave me the freedom to change careers frequently and meet a diverse group of people—movie and TV stars, admirals and generals, war heroes, politicians, aviators, Olympic gold medalist skiers, and, yes, journalists. The list goes on and on.
It has been an incredible, wonder-filled, surprisingly serendipitous, happy life of two journeys. I had to walk two high wires, balancing the straight one—I held top-secret clearance throughout my military career—with the other, my love-filled life. It has been a wonderful romp, and I would like to take you along for the ride.

"Lee Klein is an captivating storyteller." I have not had the pleasure of reading his book yet, however, whenever he tells a story I am captivated...
"Lee is a very unassuming man....But when you open that flower you discover a man that has had a VERY interesting life...covering a multitude of interests, from skiing in the Andes, to restaurant owner, pastry chef....I think of the movie Forest Gump....all the people he has met and the things he has done.....not being a "name dropper" one only has to listen to a past recollection to understand the vastness of his life experiences!"...
"On page 49 you mentioned that an S2F had a pilot and two crew members. It actually has a pilot, a co-pilot, and two crew members." Douglas A.
